What should I do on my first morning?

Wake before six and walk to the temple while the streets are still grey-blue. The bell carries across the valley; you'll have the moss gardens entirely to yourself.

Where do locals actually eat?

Skip the guidebook lists. The tea house above the valley has framed the same view since 1763 — order matcha and a seasonal wagashi, and stay until the light shifts.

How long should I stay?

A season, not a week. Stay long enough that the rice fields change colour while you watch and the baker sets aside your loaf without asking.
